20 Weeks: First Time Kicks

20-weeks-pippa-1.jpg

This week started off with our 20 week doctor's appointment. The doctor also confirmed that our anatomy scan results looked great, and that there were no complications as far as she could see. While we weren't expecting to hear differently, it definitely was welcome news. The appointment was quite short. She listened to the baby's heartbeat (which was in the 130s) and I also got a flu shot (note the weird red rash on my arm above). Our doctor also told us to start considering pediatricians. We had a tough time finding an OB who was accepting new patients, so we'll definitely head her advice to pick a pediatrician in the next few months. She also suggested that we take a tour of the hospital that we will be delivering at (New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell), so I went online and booked a tour date for December.

And even more exciting than our 20 week appointment was that I was able to feel the baby kick for the first time! Earlier that day I had been asking our doctor when I could expect to feel the baby kick, and she said that it would most likely be within the next 2-4 weeks if I hadn't felt it already (I have an anterior placenta, which can make feeling the baby a little more difficult because the placenta cushions the movements). That night I was lying on our sofa, watching football, when I felt a weird pulsing in my stomach. It wasn't continuous, but it happened every few minutes. At the time I wasn't absolutely sure, but suspected that it was the baby moving. Since then I have been feeling the baby kick more often, mostly when I am sitting and usually right after I eat. It is the coolest most amazing experience!

My younger sister also came to visit us for the weekend. We spent Saturday afternoon walking around DUMBO after walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. We also enjoyed an afternoon snack, some of the best (if not the best) ice cream in the city! If you live in the city or are visiting, I highly recommend that you visit The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory as soon as possible.

On Sunday I went to my very first baby shower for a friend. Here's a picture of me posing by their adorable baby shower decorations!

And then on Sunday evening I went all the way from New Jersey to Tarrytown, New York to enjoy a special dinner at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. My sister did a full recap here on her blog.

Here's what's happening with Baby Riley this week:

  • Baby Riley is about the size of a banana
  • He or she is 10 inches long from head to heel
  • He or she is swallowing more often

And what's happening with me:

Weight Gained: Officially gained 9 pounds since our first appointment at 12 weeks, and as your can tell from the above photo my stomach is growing quickly!

Maternity Clothes: Some of my shirts are beginning to look too short, so I've been wearing a few maternity shirts and some longer t-shirts.

Workouts: I'm feeling much better (last week I was sick), so I've been back at the gym and managed to get 3-4 strength training sessions in and a few days of light cardio.

Symptoms: Occasional round ligament pains, but other than that I feel great.

Food Aversions/Cravings: Nothing to report here!

Sleep: Still loving my snoogle

Looking forward to: My friend's wedding in North Carolina next weekend! I also get to visit one of my best friends who lives in Raleigh. And feeling the baby kick more often!
