27 Weeks: The Third Trimester is Here!

Wow, I can't believe that we are already in the third trimester. It's like an inner alarm bell went off in the last few weeks and I'm nervous about getting everything done (nursery, childbirth classes, etc.) before this little one arrives in February. Everyone tells me that we'll be fine, but I'm still freaking out just a little bit. In the meantime, I've been cleaning out EVERYTHING from our apartment. I went through our closets and my dresser and probably gave away half of my clothes to goodwill. It felt great.

I've also buckled down and started reading the few books that I purchased about childbirth and newborns. I read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and it actually made me more worried about childbirth (which makes no sense, because the book was all about empowering birth stories). I've also started reading The Happiest Baby on the Block and love it so far, very helpful.

So now that we know that I'm going crazy, let's see what's happening with Baby Riley this week:) I can tell you from first hand knowledge that this kid is getting stronger. The kicks are definitely more powerful than they were a few weeks ago and I have begun to notice patterns in his or her activity.

Here's what's happening with Baby Riley this week:

  • Baby Riley, according to the sources I have read, is the size of a cauliflower (which is what I thought it was a few weeks ago, so now I'm confused)
  • He or she is weighing in at 2 pounds and is close to 14.5 inches long
  • He or she is waking and sleeping at regular intervals and opening and closing his or her eyes
  • The baby's lungs are capable of functioning (with a lot of medical help) if he or she was born now

And what's happening with me:

Weight Gained: We go to the doctor in about a week, but in the meantime I am going to guess 16 pounds.

Favorite Moment: Feeling the baby toss and turn when I switch the side that I am sleeping on at night. I can also feel when the baby moves position inside my uterus. There are no kicks, but I feel a lot of pressure when that happens.

Workouts: I managed to go to the gym almost every day this week, and even bit the bullet and went swimming one day! I purchased a cheap bathing suit (I bought a TYR swimsuit in a few sizes up on Amazon) and swam laps for 35 minutes on Friday. The workout felt good, but afterwards I felt super sleepy (it was weird).

Symptoms: In general, I would say that I feel great. I still have a lot of energy and for the most part feel very normal. However, I definitely have the odd twinges of pain or lower back aches that make me realize that I sometimes just need to take it easy and sit down.

Food Aversions/Cravings: We had bagels for breakfast this past weekend (yay!) and I also made this Lemon Crumb Cake from my sister's blog. The directions were a bit strange, but the end product was great! I would definitely make it again.

Sleep: I'm still sleeping relatively well. I do toss and turn a bit, and the other night my back was bothering me as I was sitting up in bed reading.

Looking forward to: Our next doctor's appointment, which is next week!
