This week we had our monthly checkup at our Obstetrician's office and I was scheduled to take the Glucose Challenge Screening, which tests for Gestational Diabetes. I had to arrive at the doctor's office 45 minutes before our appointment so that I could drink the glucose drink (your blood is drawn exactly one hour after finishing the drink). I had heard that the drink tastes horrible, so I wasn't looking forward to chugging a whole bottle within 5 minutes. Howerver, after tasting my first sip, I was pleasantly surprised. It was sweet, but not awful. By the last few sips however I thought that it was completely disgusting and sickeningly sweet. Lesson learned: Chug It Quickly!
After finishing, I went back out to the waiting room where I sat with Brian for 15-20 minutes reading a magazine until we were called back to see the doctor. Our actual doctor's appointment went very well. I was weighed (up 13 pounds from our 12 week appointment, so right on track) and our doctor listened to the baby's heartbeat (141 bpm). I did ask about the occasional tightness that I feel when I am walking or working out, and she said that it could be contractions. She told me that it's normal and not to worry about it unless they didn't subside when I sat down.
Other than doctor's appointments, we had a fun weekend celebrating Halloween and my sister's bridal shower in Washington, D.C. over the weekend. I hope that you all had a fun Halloween. I can't believe that November is already here and that Thanksgiving is less than a month away!
Here's what's happening with Baby Riley this week:
- Baby is approximately 13.5 inches long and 1.5 pounds. According to one source, it is the size of a cauliflower
- Baby Riley is fattening up and his or wrinkled skin is beginning to smooth out
- His or her hair is also growing
And what's happening with me:
Weight Gained: Officially 13 pounds since our initial appointment at 12 weeks.
Favorite Moment: Hearing the baby's heartbeat at our doctor's appointment and feeling more kicks
Workouts: 3 weight/circuit training sessions (one with my trainer) and 2 cardio sessions at the gym. I also went on a long walk with my mom while visiting DC this past weekend.
Symptoms: We were at our friend's house for their Halloween party on Friday and after being on my feet for hours I started to experience some lower back pain. As soon as I sat down for a few minutes it went away.
Food Aversions/Cravings: None, although I did enjoy some Halloween candy this week.
Sleep: I slept well this week, no complaints!
Looking forward to: We're going to have an ultrasound in a few days with a cardiologist to make sure that the baby's heart is healthy and normal. It's just a precaution because we have a family history, so we're not really worried, just excited to see the baby again!
