17 Weeks: Getting Bigger

What a fun, yet exhausting week! We took a red-eye flight home from San Francisco and landed in NYC early on Labor Day morning. We managed to get a few hours of rest on Monday before doing errands and getting our acts together for the work week. The jet lag really got to me this time, I'm not sure if pregnancy made the difference or if I just had a difficult time adjusting but I wanted to sleep in every day this week.

In the middle of the week we celebrated our engagement anniversary. Brian proposed in Central Park three years ago. Unfortunately, we only have a photo of him on that day (he wanted a photo of him lying on his NY Giants blanket, he didn't remember to take a photo of me. Priorities people!). Anyway, to celebrate we went to the quarterfinals at the US Open on Wednesday night. We were lucky enough to see the top seeds on both the men and women's side (Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic). The Djokovic vs Andy Murray match was really exciting but we unfortunately had to leave early (midnight).

On the baby front, I really do think that I popped this week! I never used to believe the phrase "popped", I figured that it would be more gradual. But honestly, I woke up one day and my stomach all of sudden felt more round and noticeably harder.

Here's what's happening with Baby Riley this week:

  • Baby Riley is the size of a turnip
  • The placenta is growing stronger and thicker 
  • Some of the soft cartilage is turning into bone
  • His/her sweat glands are forming

And what's happening with me:

Weight Gained: I'm not sure, maybe 7 pounds? We'll know for sure in 3 weeks during our 20 week appointment.

Maternity Clothes: My stomach really grew this week! I can still fit into some of my old shorts, but my pre-pregnancy jeans are definitely not comfortable.

Workouts: After almost a week of vacation, I've been back at the gym working on strength training (including a lot of TRX exercises). Unfortunately, I am still having some piriformis pain, but it comes and goes. Long walks or brief running seem to make it worse.

Symptoms: I've felt really good this week, and it's exciting to be able to feel my stomach grow.

Food Aversions/Cravings: I haven't had any cravings this week, nada! In fact, I would say that most of the time I have difficulty deciding what I am in the mood to eat. When we went to the US Open I had no idea what to order from the concession stands. Thankfully I ended up choosing a surprisingly decent grilled salmon sandwich that came with some amazingly delicious hot curly fries. 

Sleep: My snoogle arrived at the beginning of the week. It is MASSIVE. I totally underestimated its size. However, it really has helped me sleep. Unfortunately, it has had the opposite affect on Brian. He's not so sure that he wants to share our bed with a Snoogle for the next 5 months.
