Life with Arthur: Weeks 7 & 8

Dear Arthur,

You continue to grow and grow and grow, especially those cheeks! Physically, apart from becoming a chubster, you are getting longer and are fitting in almost exclusively 0-3 month outfits. And good news, you are starting to sprout some hairs on the very top of your head, where previously you looked like you had a receding hairline.

The biggest development? You smiled for your dad for the first time on your Uncle TJ's birthday.

I'm not going to lie, I was jealous of dad, but it made him so very happy to see you smile at him. Since then you have only smiled at us a handful of times (and it takes a lot of coaxing!), but every time that you smile we get so excited (and I mean, seriously excited!).

You are consistently grasping and swatting at the toys that hang from your activity mat, and you love to grab my hair, shirt, skin, neck (not even sure how you do that), and hands. I think that it makes you feel more secure. You are especially "grabby" when you are on your changing pad because you don't like to feel off-balance.

We have been outside almost every day during the last two weeks. You help me run errands, whether it be to the grocery store, the post office, or to drop off your dad's dry cleaning. You sleep almost the entire time, especially if I put you in the car seat instead of the bassinet. You have also been on a few walks in the Ergo Carrier. You complain when we first put you in the carrier, but always sleep well once you have calmed down. Your dad enjoys taking you out in the carrier too and we're hoping to go on more walks when the weather warms up. Speaking of the weather, it has snowed at least 8 or 9 times since you have been born and most days are very cold. I can't wait to take you out without worrying about you getting too cold.

You still prefer to be held on our shoulders, and complain if we hold you in a cradle position. Usually it takes a good deal of shushing and burping to help you fall asleep. I can occasionally put you in the Boppy pillow for a nap, but you still prefer to nap on either your dad or I.

Unfortunately you get particularly fussy in the evenings, as soon as your dad gets home, lucky him! We are now resorting to the hair dryer trick constantly, and we have downloaded white noise apps on our phones which help you stay asleep. For some reason you also instantly calm down when you are having your diaper changed, we think that you like the reflections of the photos hanging on the wall above your dresser. And you absolutely adore looking in mirrors. You love to stare at yourself in the little mirror on your activity mat, or sometimes we walk you around to let you look at the other mirrors in the apartment.

Thankfully you are such a champ at sleeping during the night. You typically only get up once during the night to eat. We put you down between 10:30 and 11:30pm at night after your dad feeds you a bottle and you usually wake up sometime between 4:00am-5:30am. After you eat we both go back to sleep until 7:30-8:00am. I feel very lucky to be getting this much sleep, I hope that it continues because I think that we're in a pretty good rhythm right now.

Oh, and you love baths now! You just sit back and completely relax as we bathe you. Take a look at yourself.

Next week we'll be taking you on your first train! You'll be visiting Gammy, Po Po, Uncle Matt and Uncle TJ in New Jersey for Easter.

We love you so much, thank you for bringing a smile to our faces every day.
